SHERIDAN, WY — June 8, 2026 — Still riding high as the #1 ranked Western documentary movie on IMDb after its worldwide premiere during the “Super Bowl” of Western sports, the National Finals Rodeo (NFR), the heavily Wyoming influenced production Outriding the Devil comes to Sheridan on its limited Premiere Tour on Sunday July 5, to begin Sheridan’s Rodeo Week celebrations at the WYo Theater.
“The Sheridan WYO Rodeo and World Championship Indian Relay, along with the Gold Buckle Club, are honored to kick off this year’s Rodeo Week Celebration with the premiere of this outstanding documentary,” says Zane Garstad, Executive Director of the Sheridan WYO Rodeo and World Championship Indian Relay. “It embodies the western way of life we hold dear, while embracing modern advances in rodeo, and highlighting the essential role Native Americans play,” continues Garstad.
Described as “Masterful” by the Houston Chronicle, “An unbelievable true story” by Sports Illustrated, and “One of the great rodeo movies” by rodeo’s governing body, the PRCA, Outriding the Devil features the most inspirational comeback in rodeo history: how world champion barrel racer and Texas Rodeo Hall of Famer, Angela Ganter, overcame Stage 4 breast cancer in a decade-long fight for life and, as she says, “went from death’s door to the winner’s circle” at Cheyenne Frontier Days to fulfill her remarkable return to pro rodeo.
Yellowstone and Marshals star Mo Brings Plenty plays a significant role in the docudrama. “Outriding the Devil is no ordinary movie. It’s the most amazing true story,” he says. “It has an incredible cast. Some of today’s PRCA world champions, Yellowstone universe cast members, and country music stars.”
Among an ensemble line-up from rodeo, Outriding the Devil features 10X PRCA World Champion, Stetson Wright, legendary ProRodeo Hall of Famer Bob Tallman, and PRCA World Champions Shad “Money” Mayfield, Ky Hamilton, Zeke Thurston, WPRA World Champion, Fallon Taylor, and currently the world’s number one saddle bronc rider, Rusty Wright.
Wyoming has a strong presence in the movie. Country star Ned LeDoux features as both an actor and interviewee, sharing insights into his iconic father, Chris LeDoux. Fellow country singer and CFD Hall of Famer, Chancey Williams, acts and performs. All-world bullfighter, Dusty Tuckness, and former Wyoming governor, Matt Mead, are among the main contributors. Writer/director Raen LeVell and executive producer Karen True also call Wyoming home. Some 60% of Outriding the Devil was filmed in Wyoming.
The odds were against Angela Ganter surviving Stage 4 breast cancer. If she did, it was incomprehensible that she might ride again, let alone compete. But Ganter decided otherwise. During her ordeal, Angela somehow managed to coach her daughter, Jackie Ganter, to the WPRA Rookie of the Year title at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR).
The film is narrated by Mo Brings Plenty’s Yellowstone castmate, Forrie J. Smith. “I remember almost choking up,” Smith says, a former roughstock rider on the pro circuit. “This film will inspire you and make your problems seem like nothing.” The film’s title is a reference to the “red devil” chemo Angela outrode.
However, Outriding the Devil is about more than Angela Ganter’s indomitable will and courage to overcome cancer and return to rodeo; on a sweeping canvas that stretches from frontier Texas in 1850 to the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) in 2024, Ganter’s life and pioneering ranching heritage serve as both living history and a metaphor for Western culture and rodeo.
In keeping with WYO Rodeo’s strong Native American presence, in the movie Mo Brings Plenty (Lakota) and Derrick Begay (Navajo) discuss American Indian contributions to rodeo, from Comanche Chief Quanah Parker to the iconic Nez Perce bronc rider, Jackson Sundown, roper and matinee idol Will Rogers (Cherokee), and 8X world champion Don Gay (Choctaw). “Native American culture has influenced the WYO Rodeo since its humble beginnings in 1931 and continues to this day, most notably within our World Championship Indian Relay races, known as one of the first and finest Rodeo Indian Relay events in the US,” explains Garstad.
Some of the only existing footage of Old West giants like Quanah Parker and early rodeo legends Jackson Sundown, George Fletcher and Bertha Blancett add emphasis to the movie’s breadth. Mo Brings Plenty credits multi-award winner Raen LeVell with bringing new life to these historic stories. “Raen and Taylor (Sheridan) are very similar in some ways. They are both visionaries and amazing storytellers,” explains Brings Plenty, one of the most popular stars from Sheridan’s Yellowstone. “They both also share my passion to depict our history and culture accurately.”
LeVell is also the writer/director of the Amazon streaming hit “Buffalo Daze” which is the first Western feature since “Shane” in 1953 to depict Wyoming that was actually shot in the Cowboy State. LeVell just won three categories at the prestigious 2026 Accolade Global Film Competition, alongside the likes of Emmy and Golden Globe winner, Sir Idris Elba.
2024 All-Around World Champion, Shad “Money” Mayfield, and Lily Wright, daughter of PRCA World Champion Cody Wright and sister of the Wright brothers, both make their acting debuts in Outriding the Devil. Two-time GRAMMY® nominee Radney Foster provides classic and original songs to the soundtrack.
Forrie J. Smith encapsulates “Outriding the Devil” in one of his narrations: “When you watch a rodeo, the spirit that made America looks back. E Pluribus Unum. Out of many, one.”
LeVell will be present to introduce the movie and hold a Q&A.
